Spring 2003 to Fall 2004 Director, Chautauqua Center for the Visual Arts, at the Chautauqua Institution. Directed art gallery and gift shop in summer cultural retreat in rural New York State. Responsible for hiring and supervising staff, curating and hanging exhibitions, planning and organizing events such as concerts and lectures, grant writing, publishing newsletters and other publications. Oversaw gift shop. Full time position June, July, Aug., part time Sept. through May.
1997 to 2000 Director of Development, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Responsible for public relations and fundraising, including designing and writing annual solicitation materials. Established major donor campaign with trustees and Executive Director. Supervised the organization of public events. Assisted with grant applications. Designed and created promotional materials.
1996 to 1997 Acting Assistant Director, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Assisted in most aspects of running one of the nation's largest year-round artists' retreats. Ran the art gallery and, working with volunteers and interns, organized the institution's art collection including photo-documentation of artworks. Responsible for personnel management, public relations and desktop publishing, including annual report and newsletters.
1994 to 1996 Manager, telefund campaign for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Hired, trained, supervised employees in successful fundraising campaign. Also planned, organized and established telefund campaign for the San Francisco Ballet.
1990 to 1993 Program Specialist, Smoke Free Santa Fe, a smoking cessation and education pilot project funded by the National Cancer Institute. Planned, organized, supervised, and publicized programs including workshops, seminars, contests, youth video (shown on network television). Part-time position.
1984 to 1991 Organizer, New Mexico Right to Choose, an affiliate of NARAL. Supervised volunteers, organized fundraisers and membership drives, educational programs and demonstrations. Part-time position.
1985 to 1987 Assistant Manager, Presden Gallery, Santa Fe, a contemporary art gallery. Responsibilities included hanging exhibitions, organizing gallery openings, sales, communicating with artists, designing and placing advertising. Part-time position.
1984 to 1985 Sales Associate, Edward Curtis Gallery, Santa Fe, a photography gallery specializing in Edward Curtis photographs, and the work of other American photographers. Part-time position. Moved on with director of Curtis Gallery to Presden Gallery.
1981 to 1984 Art Director, Leach Research, a market research company. Hired and trained assistants and supervised twenty-four hour production schedule in art/typesetting department. Responsible for all design and typesetting.
1972 Art Director, Studio Prins, a company specializing in publicizing package tours. Worked within tight deadlines to design and produce brochures selling more tours than any in clients' history.
1965 to 1972 Owner/manager, "Roses," a successful young women's fashion boutique. Directed all aspects of own retail business including buying, sales, hiring and training employees, publicity, banking, and bookkeeping.
Design
1961 to 2000 Graphic artist. Employed in South Africa, England, Canada, and the United States in advertising agencies, newspapers, a market research company, a printing company. Also freelanced. Familiar with all phases of graphic design and desktop publishing from conception through layout, typography, to camera ready art. Designs included advertisements, logos, posters, flyers, bumper stickers, brochures, decals, invitations.
1985 to 1989 Partner in ceramics business, Rose Y Velasco. Designed, built, glazed, ceramic art objects sold in galleries in New Mexico, Idaho, Arizona. 1965 to 1972 Dress Designer, "Roses." Worked on design and production of women's clothing; also window display for own successful fashion boutique.
